gill.i.am continued

the images above and below are part of
the ornate bordering that will guild the
compass/frame

creative freedom is rarely a curse but
freedom of time sometimes is..with a loose
time frame this cd and promo image has been
perculating for many months now ..problem
was i was spending too much time on
the minutia and not enough on the big
picture..so thank god for boredom at train
stations where i roughly nutted out what the
image would look like rather than , how crazy
can i make these flying tubas..
in this case i feel a tad like terry

as much as mr gilliam is a resource
in this mammoth artwork another artist
who mastered the epic image and creation
of worlds other than our own is henry darger.
his committment to even the smallest detail
as a mammoth inspiration everytime i fall into
a pattern of laziness

finders keepers

UPDATE: This was a finalist..
one of six and i am over the moon
at the news..also placed was my friend
jordan clarke

the idea than ran throughout is
i wanted these two in hoddies and
to be like 1980's hip hop sharmans..
but with polaroid and view master
faces..in the final production of
it thats when this polaroids of
leaves being blown of someones head
came about( those moments are always
the most joyous..when your mind hits
4wd and goes right off road..

the early sketches and mock up
were rather different to the end
result as you can see i steered
away and put them on an old
motorcycle until i realised
i should return to something
more like the original image

magrittes modern love child

from this sketch drawn on a bumpy bus
ride while taking a break from an idea
that i thought was a better one at the
time this little mash up of magritte and
the 80's ( and a need to give something
many many eyes) this image went through
many agonizing forms till i got it right

the muppet man

i recieved an email from a friend of mine
recently , tim weekes , telling me that his
brother had just won many awards in hollywood
for best unproduced screenplay of the year..
to support his brothers triumphs he decided to
get the script hard bound and asked me to design
something for its cover..a huge huge honour for
me as jim henson is a big hero of mine..with
jims shy personality in mind i designed this
cover to be simple and personal and very emotive
.i discoverd a beatiful photo of jim and reworked
it,stripping it right back to basics..

anyways here is the result

real men cry lightbulbs and pocket watches

the original idea for this was a
lot simpler..just a pair of eyes
weeping watches and lightbulbs..
an idea that came to me when i saw
something what wasnt there...from
this i made tall ships with budgies
in the form of tall ships riding
eyebrow waves(soon deleted)

after discussions about our love
of old typewriters we decided to
have a old underwood with the
image duplicated over and over
again on a jack kerouac style
scroll..

so i set up a little photo studio
in my room and photographed my own
underwood using fax paper as the scroll

you can't handle the tooth

recently i was asked to come up
with an identity for a dental
laboratory ..the joy and agony of
this was i was asked to avoid any
tooth imagery ...the end result
is something very late 50's is
style and kinda my idea of a square
circle..(kinda sums up trying to think
outside the tooth)

theres was many concepts drawn up.
below is just the short list of ideas
